This novel is regarded as one of the most outstanding and timeless novels. It was written by Russian Novelist,Fyodor Dostoyevsky in 1866.
It is classified as a crime, suspense and psychoanalysis novel. In psychoanalysis, the author delves in the analysis of the self and the whims that strike it. He discusses how the human self carries a contradiction within itself; it includes the highest of ideals, yet also hides the worst of moralities. It carries justice and the desire to fulfill it,yet it contains the desire to commit crimes.
The novel tells the story of a youngman called Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov who is 23 years old. Rodion is an impoverished university ex-student. He has a contradictory and dual personality who hates the society and is indifferent towards it. But he is also a loving,warm and compassionate person.
Rodion comes from an average family, lives inextreme poverty, and because of his temerity, stupidity and distorted thinking he thinks that redeeming himself from the financial crisis he is in and his miserable situation is going to happen suddenly, by a single stroke of luck, and that he can get back to the straight life.
His stroke of luck was to kill an old, stupid, deaf and greedy moneylender who does not carefor anyone, nor does she feel compassionate towards any of the poor creditors.She never regrets destroying other people’s life, and all she dreams about is to gain more and more money interests. She even destroyed her sister’s life and used to torture her although her sister was caring for her.
But for the novel’s protagonist she is an old woman who offenses the world around her and that she must be eliminated. She is old, and she might die within few months, so whywait?!
Raskolnikov, the novel’s protagonist,commits his crime and kills the old moneylender dreaming of helping his mother and sister and pursue his university education. After committing the crime, a complex psychological process starts. The murderer begins to see the outcomes of his crime and starts to be tormented by his conscience. He is now trapped between the good and evil desires that God has instilled in the human self and the law that humans have created. This internal conflict led him to seek solitude and break away from people. His psychological agony and remorse continue to haunt him so much so that he decided to willingly accept the type of torture that the law shall inflict upon him so that he can finally atone for his crime.
But he already knows that the punishment that the law shall decide will not be harsher than his internalagony. Despite that, he decides to surrender himself to the law and the court.
During his imprisonment, Raskolnikov goes through a human experience that restores his humanity. It was a love relationship with a prostitute called Sonia whom he knew through her drunken father who forced her into prostitution for money. This is how love can change the psychological structure of this stray young man, besides the physical punishment in prison.

“Gulliver'sTravels” is an imaginary story written by the English Author, Jonathan Swift,in 1726. The story is a political satire that is related to the rights of theindividual, democracy and the regime. The story’s protagonistis the Surgeon Doctor, Gulliver, who travels across extraordinary lands inwhich he meets people living in bizarre societies and encounters even morebizarre incidents.
The storyconsists of four parts each of which tells the specifics of each of the fourvoyages. These voyages altogether took him fifteen years to complete, and heused to come back to Britain after each voyage just to embark on the next one.
The First Voyage:Gulliver sails onboard a ship heading to the east. Unfortunately, the shipcrashes and is wrecked by a massive storm. Gulliver is washed ashore after theshipwreck and finds himself tied up with ropes by a race of tiny people whowere 15 centimeters tall; they then take him to prison.
After a while, Gulliverquickly learns their language and meets the King of their land.That land,known as “Lilliput”, was divided between two parties: The first one insists onfollowing the tradition of their ancestors by wearing high-heel shoes, whereasthe followers of the other party prefer wearing low heel shoes.
The emperor’s grandfather, then in command of the country, commanded all Lilliputians tobreak their eggs on the small end first. He made this decision after breakingan egg in the old way, large end first, and cutting his finger. But the peoplerevolt against the King and flee to another country named “Blefuscu” which theKing of Lilliput decides to attack.
Gulliver assists the King in taking over Blefuscu’s fleet but he refuses to take the inhabitants of that island as prisoners.As a result, the King of “Lilliput” decides to imprison Gulliver again.
Gulliver escapes to “Blefuscu” where he lives a couple of months beforeescaping to the sea in an old boat.
In the end, a passing British ship findshim and returns him back to Britain.
The Second Voyage: Gulliver sets off to India but faces a strong storm on the way and is forced to sail for land. He finds himself on a strange land called “Brobdingnag” where he is found by a giant farmer. The farmer takes Gulliver with him. To his surprise, Gulliver discovers that he is in the land of the giants. He looked as if he is 15centimeters tall compared to these giants, judging from Gulliver estimating a man's step being 10 meters.
Insects, birds and dogs were all larger than him;cats were the size of mules.
The farmer presents Gulliver to his daughter as gift whom she keeps as a toy. After that he is given to the Queen where he explains to her and to the King the royal regimes in Britain and Europe. The King is not happy with Gulliver's accounts of Europe, so he orders sending himback to Britain.
The Third Voyage: Gulliver sails east wherehe is attacked by pirates and is marooned close to a desolate rocky island near India. Fortunately, he is rescued by the flying island of Laputa, a kingdom devoted to the arts of music and mathematics where scientists live. The name of this Kingdom is “Balnibarbi”in which Gulliver sees the Grand Academy and witnesses the role of scientists there who can hear the sounds made by stars, and uncover political conspiraciesby examining the excrement of suspicious persons.
Gulliver awaits a trader who can take him on to Japan. While waiting for a passage, Gulliver takes a shortside-trip to the island of “Glubbdubdrib”. In Japan Gulliver meets theEmperor after which he returns back to Britain.
The Fourth Voyage: On this voyage, Gulliver is involved in a dispute between the sailors and the Captain, and after keepinghim contained for some time they resolve to leave him on a remote island wherehe comes upon a race of hideous, deformed and savage humanoid creatures called“Yahoos”.
There he meets a type of horses that speak the language of“Houyhnhnms” which means “the perfection of nature”; these horses are the rulers of the island. Gulliver comes to admire the “Houyhnhnms”, especially when comparing them with the human being and the Yahoos who pose a threat to civilization. Houyhnhnms rules that Gulliver is a danger to their civilization,and expel him.
He is then rescued by a Portuguese ship and head back again to Britain

Don Quixote
The original title of this novel is “Don Quixote of La Mancha”. Arabs used to wrongly call it “Donkishot”. The Novel was written by the Spanish Author, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, and consists of two volumes.
The first volume was published in 1605, where as the second volume was published in 1615, following the success of the first one.
Don Quixote is considered by critics as the most influential work of literature and the number one European novel.
The story of Don Quixote is that of an individual who lives in the past through his words and tools and refuses to live according to the modern lifestyle or understand its changes. He also refuses transformations and does not recognize them. Therefore, he enters into battles whose reasons are found only in his mind, and fights windmills. For this reason, his life is full of humorous and ridiculous ironies.
The events of this novel are centered on a retired country gentleman named Alonso Quixano who decides to leave his house and become a gallant knight. He dons an old suit of armor and a worn helmet. Herides an exhausted horse named "Rocinante", and convinces a simple farmer named “Sancho Panza” to become his companion and carry his weapons for him on his quests to fight oppression around the world.
The funny irony here is that the Knight’s size is half that of his giant assistant who rides a donkey while Don Quixote rides a horse. In the novel, Don Quixote represents a human model with a high moral character, a dreamy and adventurous personality that is irrational in its decisions and confrontation methods. When Don Quixote fights the windmills he pictures their sails as the arms of the devils and attacks them with his spear. His assistant Sancho Panza warns him, but Don Quixote never listens. His lance gets caught in the windmill’s sail, throwing him and Rocinante to the ground.
In another event, Don Quixote attacks and fights a large group of enemies; his friend shouts trying to dissuade his master, but all in vain. The battle was actually with a herd of sheep that Don Quixote mistook for an army. At the end of the battle Don Quixote had killed a number of sheep. As a result, shepherds attacked him by throwing stones on him. They broke his jaw and teeth.
Later on, Don Quixote attacks small houses thinking they were military castles. He also attacks priests in a funeral. This is just some of the many acts of heroism that ended up by having Don Quixote tied up with ropes by his neighbors who take him back to his village.
In the second volume, Don Quixote continues waging his imaginary battles and promises Sancho Panza that he would appoint him as the ruler of an island after he wins the battle.
At the end of the novel, Don Quixote declares he is recovered from his madness, and dies among his family and neighbors who cry upon his death out of compassion and grief.

On the outskirts of Stuttgart, the German city where Gottlieb Daimler invented the automobile 129 years ago, a team of engineers is envisioning a future when people won’t own or even drive their cars.
Instead, the few dozen members of Daimler AG’s business innovation unit are figuring out how current customers’ children will use the carmaker’s products. That can mean everything from car-sharing in Chinese megacities to 3-D printing for classic car parts, package-delivery drones and a driverless concept car that doubles as a luxury lounge.
Reviewing the best use for the automobile has become a necessity for the maker of the Mercedes S-Class luxury sedan as more drivers question the traditional concept of individual ownership. As transport evolves from a product to a service, changes set in motion by the likes of Google Inc., Uber Technologies Inc. and Tesla Motors Inc. are forcing Daimler to react and make bold predictions about the future of mobility.
“As the inventor of the automobile, we see our role in reinventing the car of the future,” Daimler Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche said in an interview. The change is accelerating, he added, and autos in the future will “differ more starkly from today’s vehicles than has been the case over the past 10 to 20 years.”
Daimler has a unique place in the auto industry. The company makes almost everything with wheels and an engine, including passenger cars, delivery trucks and city buses. The three points on the Mercedes star represent the founders’ goal of motorizing land, sea and air.
Changing World
Still, the company’s relationship with its core car business has been in flux in recent decades. It sought to become a diversified technology group with acquisitions in electronics and aviation in the 1980s. That was followed by the ill-fated effort to become a global auto group, including the failed 1998 merger with U.S.-based Chrysler. Under Zetsche, who became CEO in 2006 and also oversees the Mercedes car division, the company has returned to its automotive roots. But even then, Zetsche saw the automotive world was changing.
“They realized that they needed to do something and that it’s not enough to offer cars with a star on the hood,” said Frank Biller, a Stuttgart-based analyst with LBBW.
Zetsche set up the think tank in 2007 and gave it a license to try out new ideas -- successful or not. Its offices are a short drive from the carmaker’s headquarters in Stuttgart, surrounded by streets named for company founding fathers Daimler, Wilhelm Maybach and Carl Benz.
“I’m very optimistic about the future, as long as we’re the ones having the ideas and are working to make those visions reality,” Zetsche said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last month. The walrus-mustachioed CEO leaned back in his chair as he described ideas the future lab had recently brainstormed.
Delivery Drones
Drones could swarm out from the roof of a delivery van to distribute parcels to customers’ doorsteps, Zetsche said. Though already explored by Amazon.com Inc., pilotless aircraft would be a departure for a company now largely known for making earthbound vehicles. Daimler is also already experimenting with big-rig trucks that can drive themselves.
Zetsche said his think tank spawns some five to six new businesses each year.
In 2008, a year after its founding, the unit introduced what would be its first big success: the car-sharing program Car2Go. The project now spans 30 European and North American cities and has more than 1 million users. It’s expanding in Chongqing, China, this year. The business’s first city in Asia will be a test of whether consumers in developing auto markets are ready to pay to use rather than own vehicles.
The think tank has also weathered failures, including that of a logistics consultancy shuttered after about half a year.
Car2Go Credibility
Car2Go helped boost credibility within Daimler, said Wilfried Steffen, who took over leadership of the unit in 2011. Its offices in a commercial strip near the highway outside Stuttgart are filled with startup paraphernalia like bean-bag chairs and a foosball table.
“This job can be much more demanding than my former job, where I had clear targets in market share or customer satisfaction,” said Steffen, the former head of Mercedes-Benz sales in the U.K. “Nowadays I literally sit in front of a white paper with a cash desk next to it.”
Third Space
Though the think tank doesn’t design cars, it did help with the early conceptualization of Daimler’s splashiest recent concept, the ultra-luxury F 015. Steffen’s group suggested the vehicle could function as a so-called third space beyond work and home, a framework more often used for coffee shops, sports centers or bars. Built as a rolling luxury lounge, the F 015 drove itself down the Las Vegas Strip the night before last month’s electronics show.
“The F 015 is one of those lighthouse projects that look nice but won’t come into reality before the next decade,” said Frank Schwope, an analyst at NordLB in Hanover, Germany. “It’s more a marketing tool.”
Daimler is wrestling with the same relevancy issues as the rest of the car industry.
“There’s likely to be more auto-industry change in the next five to 10 years than in the last 50,” General Motors Co. Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra said at the World Economic Forum last month.
BMW AG set up the Project i think tank in 2007 to look at the impact of urbanization on its autobahn-focused cars. Out of that group came the i sub-brand, with its i3 electric city car and i8 plug-in hybrid racer. Ford Motor Co. opened a research center last month in Palo Alto, California, to get closer to trends near the home of companies such as Google and Apple Inc.
“We once became an integrated technology company because the automobile was seen as having no future and would fade away like the dinosaurs,” Zetsche said, referring to his predecessors’ effort to diversify. “I chose a different direction, because we believe the automobile offers endless potential.”

My friend, the renowned Syrian filmmaker (Mohammad Malas) presented me with work papers for a variety of projects he was planning to implement. From among all of those projects I chose the documentary film project about the veteran artist (Sabri Moudallal). At the time it did not occur to me that his departure was imminent. At the time no one ever attempted to conduct any work about this original artist and his marvelous ancient city, the same city that Poet (Abu at-Tayyib al-Mutanabbi) made me become attached to more than one thousand years ago.
Thus this artistic journey with (Sabri Moudallal) began. He was a man of genial and gentle character, sober and sweet voice, and a shining memory.
The viewer will notice that the memories film arrives at numerous stops and meets with many figures, starting with the Call for Prayer (Athan) that Haj Sabri performs using his melodious and strong voice, moving back and forth between five musical Maqamat (Assemblies) including the Qudud Halabiya (means musical measures of Aleppo), Andalusi poems (muwashahat), and religious songs.
Haj Sabri began his artistic career by signing with one of the “Mawlaw'īyya Sufi” band known among the people as “Milwiyya”. The film presents a wonderful scene from one of the band’s Sufi breathtaking dances that elevates the audience’s soul to the skies of ecstasy, purity and amazing beatitude.
This cinematic work comes to emphasize the glorious and charming side of the past when the sky and the earth meet, much like Sufism meet dances and songs, love with work and goodness with beauty in a harmonious and unified human whole away from intolerance, isolation and death. The viewer’s feelings will melt into this sublime art, especially when the camera shows the city of Aleppo at the end of the film with its castle, popular neighborhoods, monuments and markets. But it is impossible for us to forget that today our eyes can only see a devastated historical city, one that occupies a special place in our national, literary and architectural history. My heart is in pain to see this ancient city in such a condition. The hand of destruction has affected everything that is beautiful and original in this place, and what remains is this film which reflects the originality and uniqueness of the city.
